The Ezine

To those of you have sent in interviews and still haven't seen it posted: Please be patient with me. There are only a few interviews I have here without the codes in them and as soon as I can get to them I will, but please try to understand that I have not had much free time on my hands lately. I will get to them soon.
To those of you who have sent in URL's for the Linkage page: Please be patient with me as well, I'll get to them as soon as I can.
To those of you posting in the Poetry Corner forum: If you are not posting your own original work, please state this in your post. Don't take credit for someone elses poems.
A small vent: Don't you hate it when you sign up for a newsletter and they state "We will not sell or distribute your information to any third parties..." yet you know at least one of them did because you get like fifty junk emails in two days?!?!?!
Happy Reading~ Michie

The Chathouse
~Chat Dominatrix~

Lets Chat

Due to numerous emails from Ezine readers who aren't from the Chathouse, requesting information on chatting. This article will be focused on the topic of Chatting at The Chathouse.

Now before you regs stop reading any further, to the emails I've seen, whether they are complaints or questions, and from the comments I've seen both in the rooms and the forums. You might find some of the comments here not only useful but directed at you!

The Chathouse
www.chathouse.com  It doesn't get much easier then that! And thats about all you need to remember! The Chathouse provides links for just about anything else you may need to know.

New Chatters
Everything and anything you will need to know about this Chathouse or about chatting in it, can be found within this link.........                  New Visitors

The Links
The links I speak about further down, may be found in various places throughout the Chathouse. On the Left side of the page on the Main Page. On the left side of the page in every forum. At the top of every Who's On Page, and at the top of every page you see in while chatting.

Now here is where some regular chatters may be a little  misguided.  They bookmark there regular chatroom, and because they've chatted within the Chathouse for so long, they either forget to or don't think they need to, step outside of that room and take a look around the rest of the house every so often.

I've talked with many chatters who never realized that, not only do we have the feature Anon-E-Mail in the Message Center. But they didn't realize that there even was a Message Center.

I have even found some new chatters who knew of all the features offered under the Features link, as I watched some regulars say, " I never knew we had that."!

How many of you know there is a News Page in the Chathouse? The place where the Chathouse announces all the new features as they are added. A page where not only  chatters can read about room and floor updates. But a page where I think the regulars of the rooms should be writing into at least once a month to announce updates within their room or their floor. If you'd like to write in for your room and/or floor, simply send your comments to news@chathouse.com.

Another problem is that alot of the Chathouse regulars see the "help" Link and think it's only for newbies. This link is for all the chatters of the house, not just the newbies. It supplies you with images help, error explanations, profile editing help, and email addy's to use for certain problems.
In other words, it has alot of the answers to the questions I see so many of you emailing in about!

I would like to ask the regulars of the Chathouse, to please take a look at this link, and if there are questions not addressed in here that you see alot of new chatters asking, I would like to hear from you! I would like to hear those questions, and what you think the best answers are, and please included your handle if you don't mind it being posted!

Forums
It's amazing how such a simple and fun idea can to lead to being such a chaotic pain in the ass for so many!
Let me start by saying under the forums link there are two choices you have to choose from.

Forums By Floor
This is simply all the room forums listed by which floor they are on.

General Chathouse Topics
Here you'll find forums that aren't directly attached to or having to do with any one particular room. But instead they are there for pretty much one specific Purpose. And though most you of can, or you should, be able to understand the purpose or topic of these forums, it seems there are many who can't. So I want to take a moment here to clarify a few of these forums that are listed.

The War Room
This room was started by My2CentsDealW/it and RantMaster for the purpose and hopes of getting conversations started on real life issues outside of the chathouse. So it would be a pretty safe bet that if you had something about the Chathouse to Bitch about. This is not the place for it!
This would also mean, if you have gotten banned, this is not the place for your Bitching or whining about it! If you have any Chathouse complaints, this is not the place for it! If My2Cents or RantMaster pisses you off, again this is not the place for it! For the chatter who made this
childish post and to anyone else thinking the same as him, that this is some kind of a "feuding fools" forum, again this is not the place! There is more then enough of that pettiness in the room forums!
Please note that I will be asking RantMaster and My2Cents to add their email addy's to either their posts or somewhere within the forum. So those of you that they do piss off can address them in email where you better your chances of getting a reply from them.

Complaints Forum
And can anyone guess what this forum is for!?
You guessed it! Complaints!! Imagine, a place were not only are you allowed to just post complaint after complaint without pissing off the room you chat in, but where you are expected to!
This is wanted so that when a chatter posts a complaint, hopefully the answer that is given can also help other chatters with similar complaints. Now understand that because a complaint doesn't get answered right away, does not mean it isn't being looked into. And please remember there is a fine line between complaining and whining. If you want you and your complaint to be taken seriously look for that line before posting!

Ezine Forum
This forum, as one might guess, is for Ezine topics. Though the postings made in there last week were chatters bitching about the bitching ((my article I assume)). It's the whole purpose of that forum! For us to hear from you, whether we like what you say or not! The Ezine is for the readers, so it needs to put out what the readers want. You speaking up is the only way that gets known! So keep the posts coming! Though please do keep in my mind, that just because articles are done on topics you haven't asked for, doesn't mean that others haven't! ~S~

There are 3 other forums, listed under General Forums, and I'm hoping that just by the title of these that it is more then obvious what they are for. Remember if you want what you are saying to be heard by the right people, you need to post it in the right place! ~S~
If there is a new forum you would like to see started please feel free to email in your ideas.

I was going to talk a little about complaints and banning, but I think this article is passing it's limit in length and most readers must be asleep at this point! ~L~
So if you have comments or questions about banning and/or complaints mail them in this week and I'll address them in the next article.

My Two Cents
on Internet/Chat Safety

This is a subject that I have been hesitant to cover for some time now. There is alot of truth in the saying that "Ignorance is bliss", but in this case it is also dangerous. The source of my hesitation has been two-fold. On one side I have to consider the chatters and the fact that some people just can't handle the truth. If they truly new all the dangers they might very well give up the internet and chat altogether. Which brings me to the other side, that being the Chathouse itself. I have to weigh the possibility of costing them chatters and revenue, not to mention the fact that some of my opinions on this subject are not entirely flattering for the Chathouse.

This finally came to a head for me when I received an email talking about a story posted in one of the Chathouse Forums about a 14 yr. old boy in the U.K. that frequented a "gay chat" chatroom, met someone in there, met in real life and was sexually assaulted. The parents of the boy then began lobbying the government to pass legislation to "ban chat rooms". I was unable to verify this story, but in looking into it I found several similar cases that I could corroborate. You can see the beginning of this in the War Room: Chat at your own risk post, as well as some of the subsequent responses. The response of the parents in this case irritates me to no end, much the same as the anti-gun fanatics, they blame an inanimate object for their failure as parents. However, I am getting ahead of myself here, my intent here is not to bash the parents, but to give everyone a much needed Rude Awakening!

First and foremost, let me say that the slime that lure people into situations like this are without a doubt the responsible and guilty parties here. They initiate and carry out the criminal acts and they bear the lion's share of the "blame". With that being said however, there are several 'accomplices' in a situation like this as well. The internet is still in it's infancy and to many it is still a "new toy" that didn't come with any warning labels. Too many people are too trusting, too naive and sometimes just too plain stupid for their own good. I'm not just talking about kids, but they are the most vulnerable and prime targets, but I found examples of college students and even "mature adults" getting scammed, hurt and killed just the same.

By far it seems that chat and online personals are the most dangerous places to be on the internet. Chat and personals are frequented in large part by people who are lonely and looking for friendship, companionship and even love. Many of these people may not even realize that is why they chat until they meet someone online that says the things that they have been needing to hear. Loneliness, whether it's due to geographical isolation, physical appearance or just being shy, is a powerful emotion and a very vulnerable one as well. It shouldn't be too surprising then to find out that chat rooms and online personals are also the new frontier for scam artists, con men/women, pedophiles, rapists and murderers. I mean, WAKE UP PEOPLE, if you wanted to scam somebody or hurt somebody would you go sneaking around in dark cold alleys in this day and age or would you go hang out online and wait in the comfort of your own home for some poor lonely slob to come crying on your shoulder? People do it everyday, not even knowing who's shoulder it is they are crying on or to whom they are bearing their soul.

As I have said many times before, and I'm sure I'll say it many more times to come...
"Common Sense ain't as common as you might think."

Just like the 14 yr. old and the man from the "gay chat" room, the 13 yr. old girl in England that shared a similar fate, the 20 yr. old college student from Texas that went to meet his online "girlfriend" for the first time at a motel and met a middle-aged man instead who killed him. Sexual assault, rape, murder, but Hey, you're too smart to get yourself into a situation like that, right? You would be amazed at how many "smart people" get taken everyday by con artists and "players" online. The question is: Who do we point our collective finger at in blame and say "Hey! This is all your fault!"?

The truth is that anyone who gets online is responsible for their own fate. The "bad people" are to blame for being bad people, but the victims have the ability to protect themselves and don't do it. Are chat sites and the internet itself to blame? You might be surprised to hear me say this, but Yes they are to blame as well. The Chathouse has taken great pains to make it as safe as possible, but the very fact that they have free, public, unmonitored chat rooms is in itself an invitation to those with evil intentions. The bad people don't want to have to register and give information about themselves to the administration that may be used to identify them later. The registered rooms are a little better in that regard, but they are also where much of the more sexually explicit chats are likely to take place. To give credit where credit is due, however, the Chathouse does provide many safeguards for it's chatters. The question is, do you want to have to give your social security number, credit card info and mothers maiden name just to get into chat or is it more realistic to expect people to take a little responsibility for themselves, their actions and their own protection?

In the case of minors, the answer it straight forward. Parents have to take control! Kids will be kids, but parents must be parents, too. There are any number of ways for parents to protect their kids online. First and foremost is to NOT let them on unattended, use the password protection capability of your computer, learn how to check the history and see what they have done, when, where and most importantly WITH WHOM! In the case of older kids you may need to be a little more flexible, but you better know how to go back behind them and see what's going on. The problem is that too many parents view the computer like parents of the past have viewed the television, "It keeps them quiet and out of my hair, that's all that matters.". Do these parents deserve to loose their kids? YES! Do the kids deserve it? NO! Those are the facts of life. We cannot legislate to protect the idiots without creating more idiots dependant on "Big Brother" for protection. What we can do is EDUCATE!

In that spirit, I have collected a few good sites to get you started in your Internet Safety Education. I know, I know, YOU don't need it, you are too smart, you're not some homely, lonely wall flower, but I can guarantee you that you will more than likely learn more than you wanted to know about just how smart you AREN'T!
